# Questions, answered first.

Short, direct answers about selling and buying domain names with a broker. For depth, see the guides and the glossary.

## Selling a domain

### How does Grit Brokerage sell a domain?

Grit uses outbound sales. Full-time researchers identify all potential buyers for the name, brokers contact the relevant decision makers and negotiate the best possible price, and the name goes out in a monthly newsletter to over 8,000 domain buyers and end users. The team also markets names at domain conferences and through its podcast, social media and press releases.

### What kinds of domains does Grit sell?

Grit focuses on premium names that end users want: one-word and two-word .com domains, short names such as three-letter and four-letter .com domains, and strong names in .ai, .io, .co and other extensions. If your name is not a fit for outbound sales, a broker will tell you.

### How do I find out what my domain is worth?

Value depends on who would buy the name and what comparable names sold for. Read our guide to domain valuation, then call or email a broker with the name. We will tell you how we would market it and what end users are paying for similar names.

### Do I have to give up control of my domain to list it?

No. The domain stays in your registrar account while we market it. You only transfer it after the buyer has paid the escrow service and you have agreed to the sale.

## Buying a domain

### Can you buy a domain that someone already owns?

Often, yes. Grit runs a stealth acquisition service: a broker finds the owner, reaches out on your behalf without revealing who you are, and negotiates the price. Not every owner will sell, and some ask more than the name is worth to you, so a broker also helps you decide when to walk away.

### Will the owner know who is buying?

Not from us. Our stealth acquisition service contacts the owner on your behalf without naming you or your company. Owners often raise the price when they learn a well-funded company is interested, so we keep your identity private until the deal closes.

### Can I buy one of the domains Grit has listed for sale?

Yes. Browse the domains for sale page and use Make an offer on any name, or call a broker. Some names have a buy-now price on our motivated seller list. The rest are priced on request.

### How long does a domain acquisition take?

It depends on how quickly the owner responds and agrees. Some deals close in days, others take weeks of negotiation. Once both sides agree, escrow and the transfer usually take a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the registrars involved.

## Payment, escrow and transfers

### How is payment handled in a domain sale?

Every Grit transaction closes through a third-party escrow company. The buyer pays the escrow service, the seller transfers the domain, and the escrow service releases the money to the seller only after the buyer confirms the domain is in their account.

### Which escrow service does Grit use?

Grit uses established third-party escrow services. The Grit team has been recognized in Escrow.com's Master of Domains rankings, and many of its deals close on Escrow.com.

### How does a domain transfer work after a sale?

The seller either pushes the domain to the buyer's account at the same registrar or unlocks it and gives the buyer an authorization code to transfer it to a new registrar. The escrow service waits until the buyer confirms control before it pays the seller. Our transfer guide covers each step.
