# Auto-renew grace period

The auto-renew grace period is a window after a domain expires when the owner can still renew it, often up to 45 days. The registry's own rules and the registrar's terms set the length.

## Why it matters

An expired domain is not always gone. During the grace period the owner can usually renew at the normal price. Some registrars list the expired name for auction before the period ends. After it comes the Redemption Grace Period, which costs more. For sellers, never let a listed domain expire. For buyers, an expiring name is not yet available. A common mistake is assuming the domain drops the day it expires.
