# Domain age

How long ago a domain was first registered. Google's John Mueller has said domain age by itself does not help search rankings, though a name's history can still matter.

## Why it matters

People often pay extra for an older domain, thinking it ranks better. Public statements from Google say age alone helps nothing. What can matter is what happened during those years, such as links earned, content built or penalties received. For buyers, an old domain with a clean record and good links may have value. An old domain with a bad record can be a liability. A common mistake is assuming a recently registered name is worse for SEO. It is the history and quality that count. Judge a name by its record, not its birth date.
