# Domain holding

Domain holding is the act of owning a domain name over time, either as an investment or for a future project. The owner pays renewal fees to keep it.

## Why it matters

Holding a domain costs money every year. A .com costs only a few dollars to renew, but a big portfolio adds up, and premium names can cost more. Holders weigh that carrying cost against the chance of a future sale. Sellers should know their holding cost before setting a floor. Buyers can use that cost in a negotiation: a long-held name with a low cost can be flexible on price. A common mistake is holding names with no buyer for years.
