# .com

Dot-com is the most widely used top-level domain in the world. Verisign runs the .com registry, and it held about 166.6 million registrations in mid-2026.

## Why it matters

Most domain sales happen in .com. Buyers trust it, type it by default and expect it. For that reason a .com name usually sells for much more than the same name elsewhere. Wholesale registry fees are capped by contract, which keeps renewals low and predictable. A common mistake is treating a brand in another extension as equal. Many companies start on a cheaper extension and later buy the .com to protect the brand.
