# dotBrand TLD

A dotBrand TLD is a top-level domain that a company owns for its own brand, such as .google or .bmw. Only that company and its approved parties use it, so the public cannot register names under it.

## Why it matters

dotBrand extensions came out of the new gTLD program. The owner is the registry operator, so it controls all names. They do not trade on the aftermarket, which makes them a different thing from a premium .com. For most buyers, they matter as a signal: a brand with its own extension may still need the matching .com to defend its name. ICANN's 2026 round application window ran from 30 April to 12 August 2026, so more brand applications are expected. Common mistake: expecting to buy a name under a dotBrand extension.
