# Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP)

EPP is the standard protocol registrars use to talk to registries. It handles actions such as creating, renewing, updating and transferring domain names, and it carries status codes.

## Why it matters

You rarely see EPP, but you feel it. Status codes like clientTransferProhibited and the auth code used in transfers are EPP features. When a domain will not transfer, the cause is often an EPP status on the record. Reading those statuses in a WHOIS or RDAP lookup tells you what is blocking the move. A common mistake is guessing at a transfer problem without checking the statuses first. Your registrar can show you the status codes in plain language.
