# Escrow

A neutral third party holds the buyer's payment until the domain is transferred and accepted. It protects the seller from non-payment and the buyer from losing money without receiving the name.

## Why it matters

Escrow is the standard safety step for domain deals. The buyer pays the escrow agent, the seller moves the domain, the buyer confirms receipt, and the agent pays the seller. Escrow.com describes this five-step flow on its domain page. Nobody has to trust a stranger. A common mistake is paying a seller directly or using a lookalike escrow site. Scammers copy real escrow sites. Always type the escrow company's address yourself and confirm the transaction from your own account. Agree on who pays the fee before the deal starts.
