# Generic top-level domain (gTLD)

A gTLD is a top-level domain that is not tied to a country, such as .com, .org, .net, or hundreds of newer extensions like .app and .shop. ICANN sets the rules for the registry operators.

## Why it matters

Generic extensions fall into the legacy group, which includes .com, and the new gTLD group launched since 2012. For buyers, the extension affects trust, search habits, and resale value. .com still draws the most demand and the highest prices on the aftermarket. Newer extensions often have lower prices but fewer buyers. Common mistake: assuming every gTLD is equal. A short .com usually sells for far more than the same name in a new extension, and some new gTLDs set high premium renewal prices.
