# Proof of ownership

Evidence that a seller controls a domain, usually shown by logging into the registrar, matching registration data, or placing a requested code in the domain's DNS records.

## Why it matters

A buyer or escrow agent wants to know the seller can actually deliver the name. A simple test is for the seller to add a unique TXT record that the other side names, since only the real controller can change DNS. Other proof includes registrar screenshots with details visible and registration data that matches the seller. Screenshots alone can be faked. Sellers should be ready for this request and not be offended by it. A common mistake is a seller who cannot access the registrar account at all. Fix account access before listing a name for sale.
