# Reported sale

A domain sale whose price has been made public, often through industry sales lists such as DNJournal. Many private sales never become public, so reported sales are only part of the market.

## Why it matters

Reported sales help set price expectations because they show what real buyers paid. They are not complete or always easy to compare. Some sellers do not report, some prices include payment plans or other terms, and a few reports are not checked. A name's category, extension and buyer type all change the price. A common mistake is using a few headline sales to value an ordinary name. Look for several reported sales of similar names, in the same extension and period, and treat the figures as ranges, not exact targets.
