# Spelling test

The spelling test checks whether people can spell a domain after hearing it once. A name that passes is easy to type and share by word of mouth.

## Why it matters

The test is part of choosing a brand name. Say the name aloud to a few people and ask them to write it. If they guess wrong, they will land on another site. Hyphens, odd letter swaps and made-up spellings tend to fail. Pair it with the radio test. A common mistake is choosing a clever spelling for style. If you must, also own the common misspelling, or reconsider the name.
