# Sponsored top-level domain (sTLD)

A sponsored TLD is a top-level domain run for a specific community. A sponsoring group sets who may register. Examples include .edu, .gov, .museum, .travel and .jobs.

## Why it matters

Sponsored extensions usually have eligibility rules. Only qualified groups can register .edu or .gov, so those names are not tradeable on the open market. Others, like .travel, have looser rules. For buyers and sellers the point is simple: check eligibility before listing or offering on a sponsored TLD. A name that looks cheap may be unusable, or non-transferable, if the new owner does not qualify. Ask the registry for its rules first.
