Sunrise period

A sunrise period is an early registration window for a new TLD. Trademark holders listed in the Trademark Clearinghouse can register matching names before the public can. It lasts at least 30 days.

Why it matters

Sunrise gives brands a chance to protect their names in new extensions. Prices are often higher. Domain investors cannot join without a trademark. The 2026 new gTLD round will bring sunrise periods for newly approved extensions in later years. A common mistake is thinking sunrise registrations are only for big brands. Smaller owners with registered marks can also use them. Ignoring a launch can leave your brand open to registration by others.
