# Top-level domain (TLD)

The top-level domain is the last label in a domain name, the part after the final dot. In icann.org, the TLD is org. It sits at the top of the naming hierarchy of the Domain Name System.

## Why it matters

The TLD shapes price, trust and resale value. A .com usually sells for far more than the same name in a newer extension, because buyers expect .com first. TLDs fall into groups such as generic, country-code and sponsored. Each TLD has one registry that runs it. A common mistake is assuming a cheap new extension carries the same demand as .com. Check comparable sales in that exact extension before you price or buy.
