# Buying a Domain on a Payment Plan in 2026: Rules and Risks

Dan.com closed on June 27, 2025, and its lease-to-own deals moved to Afternic, which GoDaddy owns. You can still buy a domain on a payment plan through Afternic, Atom or Escrow.com domain holding. Terms differ on resale and use, so read the contract before you sign.

Paying for a domain in monthly steps is now a normal option. It lets a young company get a strong name without spending its cash on day one. It also comes with rules that many buyers do not read. This post covers what changed after Dan.com, where plans are offered, and what to check. For the basics, start with our guide to [domain lease to own](https://gritbrokerage.preview.multisites.ai/guides/domain-lease-to-own).

## What happened to Dan.com and its lease-to-own deals?

Dan.com shut down on June 27, 2025, and GoDaddy absorbed its lease-to-own model. GoDaddy bought Dan.com in 2022. DomainInvesting credits Dan with bringing lease to own to the mainstream and says GoDaddy adopted it.

The steps were public. On September 12, 2024, Afternic published a migration plan. New Dan.com sign-ups closed that day. Existing lease-to-own deals were to move to Afternic in November 2024. Domain Name Wire noted that Afternic then lacked a few Dan features, such as self-brokering. The closing date came in June 2025.

For buyers, the practical point is simple. The Dan.com brand is gone. The product lives on at Afternic, and rivals offer their own versions. See our glossary entries for [Dan.com](https://gritbrokerage.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/dan-com) and [lease to own](https://gritbrokerage.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/lease-to-own).

## Where can I buy a domain on a payment plan now?

You have three main routes, and each works differently.

Route

How it works

Key terms to know

Afternic lease to own

Buyer picks a term. The total cost plus applicable fees is split by month.

Terms up to 60 months. The domain is locked until the last payment. Buy It Now price must be $495 to $5,000,000.

Atom payment plan

Buyer pays over time on the platform.

Cannot list the domain on any marketplace until paid off. No illegal use.

Escrow.com domain holding

Escrow.com holds the domain while the buyer pays on a set schedule.

Minimum term three months, maximum five years. Holding fee plus the usual escrow fee.

Afternic says a buyer can use the domain right away while it stays locked. After the final payment, the domain moves to the buyer. Afternic also gives sellers a commission discount on longer terms, which is one reason sellers choose to offer them.

Escrow.com’s page lists a holding fee that depends on the domain’s value and the length of the hold. For a lease with purchase it shows 0.01% of the domain value or a $100 minimum, times the months. It also lists a $250 fee for each change to the payment schedule and an $85 fee for each administrative DNS change. Check the page for current numbers before you plan around them.

An [escrow](https://gritbrokerage.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/escrow) service matters here because the longest risk is time. A neutral party holds the asset and moves money on schedule.

## Can I resell a domain before it is paid off?

Sometimes, but the rules differ and the wording matters. Domain Name Wire compared the terms in April 2026 after a seller was surprised to see his leased domain listed for sale by the buyer.

- Atom: the domain may not be listed for sale on Atom or any other marketplace or registrar during the plan.
- Afternic: the terms do not specifically forbid listing it. They do say the buyer may not grant any third party rights to the domain, including a right to use it. They also bar activity that would decrease the domain’s value.

The author’s view was that a buyer who sells can simply pay off the balance first. He also said he would not love a buyer marketing a domain he still owns, and that heavy outreach could harm the name. That is his opinion, not a rule.

Our advice: do not plan to flip a name you are paying off. If you must sell early, ask the seller in writing. Talk to a lawyer about any contract you do not understand.

## What uses are banned during a plan?

Illegal use is banned everywhere, and some platforms go much further. Atom lists illegal activity such as spam, phishing and deceptive services, and says violations can end the plan at once. Afternic’s list is longer. It covers infringing content, harmful code, unsolicited email and black hat SEO such as keyword stuffing and doorway pages. It also bars promotions without prior written consent, like contests and sweepstakes.

Afternic says it judges breaches in its sole discretion. Treat that as a reminder to run a clean, ordinary site on the name.

## Why are payment plans growing?

Because startups will pay more when they can spread the cost. Shane Cultra told DNJournal in January 2026 that his lease-to-own sales rose sharply in 2025, including several six-figure deals. He said startups are willing to spend more when a payment runway lets them avoid putting all their capital up front, and that the seller takes on part of the risk for a higher overall price. He also saw crypto projects use plans for short-term needs and return names later, which he expects to push down payments higher. That is one investor’s experience, not market data.

Our read is practical. A plan can make a strong name reachable. It also adds a long contract, so do the checks.

## What should you check before you sign?

1. Total price, not just the monthly figure. Add all fees across the full term.
2. What happens if you miss a payment, and how long the grace period lasts.
3. Whether you can pay off early, and whether that changes the price.
4. Who holds the name, and where it is locked.
5. Resale, use and transfer rules, in plain words.
6. What you owe, and what you lose, if the plan ends early.
7. A neutral party for the money. Use a third-party escrow on every deal.

## Questions this post answers

### What happened to Dan.com and its lease-to-own deals?

GoDaddy acquired Dan.com in 2022. In September 2024, Afternic published a migration plan that said existing lease-to-own deals would move to Afternic that November. Dan.com closed on June 27, 2025. GoDaddy has since offered lease to own through Afternic.

### Where can I buy a domain on a payment plan now?

Afternic offers lease to own with terms of up to 60 months. Atom offers payment plans. Escrow.com offers a domain holding service for custom schedules from three months to five years. HugeDomains also sells on payment plans. Sellers choose whether to enable them.

### Can I resell a domain before it is paid off?

It depends on the platform. Atom bars listing the domain on any marketplace until it is paid off. Afternic does not specifically bar listing, but it bars granting third parties any rights to the domain. Read your own agreement, and ask the seller first.

### What uses are banned during a payment plan?

Both Atom and Afternic ban illegal use. Atom names spam, phishing and deceptive services. Afternic also bars infringement, harmful code, black hat SEO and anything that would decrease the domain's value. Afternic decides in its sole discretion, so keep use plain and lawful.

### Does a broker offer custom payment terms?

A broker can ask a seller whether they will accept a payment structure. Escrow.com's domain holding service can hold the name while payments are made on an agreed schedule. Whether terms are available depends on the seller. Ask early, before you make an offer.
