Country code top-level domain (ccTLD)

A ccTLD is a top-level domain reserved for a country or territory, based on the ISO 3166-1 country codes. Examples are .de for Germany and .uk for the United Kingdom.

Why it matters

Each country sets its own rules. Some require local presence, and some price names very differently from .com. A few ccTLDs are used far beyond their home country, such as .io, .ai and .co. That can bring risk. A country can change policy, and a ccTLD may fall under local law. Before buying one for a business, read the registry's rules, renewal costs and transfer terms for that extension. Local rules can also change who is allowed to hold the name.
