Domain lease

An arrangement where the owner lets another party use a domain for a recurring fee, without transferring ownership. The lessee points the domain to their site while the owner keeps the registration.

Why it matters

Leasing helps buyers who cannot afford the full price now. They get to build the brand while paying in parts. Some leases include an option to buy, called lease-to-own, and the payments may count toward the price. Terms matter. A lease should cover the term, fees, who controls DNS, what happens on missed payments and whether the owner can sell the domain to someone else. A common mistake is building a business on a lease without a purchase option or clear renewal terms. If the lease ends, the brand could lose its home.
