.org

.org is a legacy generic top-level domain, long linked with nonprofits and community groups. Public Interest Registry runs it as the registry operator, and registration is open to anyone.

Why it matters

Despite its image, .org has no nonprofit requirement. Buyers use it for charities, open-source projects, and media brands that want a trustworthy look. On the aftermarket, a short or keyword .org can sell well, but values are lower than the matching .com in most cases. Public Interest Registry is the registry operator, and it uses Identity Digital as its technical provider. Common mistake: buying the .org to protect a brand and skipping the .com, when most visitors type .com first.
