Legacy TLD

A legacy TLD is one of the older generic extensions that existed before ICANN's new gTLD program, mainly .com, .net, .org, .info, and .biz. Industry speakers use the term to separate them from newer extensions.

Why it matters

Legacy extensions are run by long-standing registry operators, and they carry the most recognition. Verisign runs .com and .net. For buyers, a legacy name usually builds trust faster with customers. For sellers, legacy names have deeper buyer pools and stronger comparable sales. Pricing can still change, so check the registry's renewal terms. Common mistake: calling .co or .io a legacy TLD. Those are country-code extensions that the market treats as generic, and they follow different rules.
