GDPR redaction

The hiding of personal details, such as a registrant's name, email and phone, from public domain registration records. Registries and registrars began doing this in 2018 to follow European privacy law.

Why it matters

After 2018, most public lookups stopped showing owner contact details. The registrar still holds the real data, and it can be released to parties with a legitimate need under set procedures. For buyers, this made it harder to find who owns a name. Many now use a broker or the contact form on a lander instead. For sellers, redaction means a buyer cannot verify you from public data, so you may need other proof of control. A common mistake is thinking redaction means nothing is recorded. The data exists. It is just not public.
