Why it matters
Many registrars add privacy by default now, and registration data is often redacted anyway. For sellers, privacy protects against spam and scams, but it also makes inbound offers harder. For buyers, it hides who to contact, which is why people use a broker to reach the owner. A proxy service can raise legal questions, since the provider is the legal holder on paper. Common mistake: selling a name held under a proxy without first checking that the account holder can authorize a transfer.
