Price cap

The .com price cap is a limit in Verisign's contract with ICANN on how much the registry can raise its wholesale fee. It currently allows 7% a year in four of every six years.

Why it matters

The cap keeps .com renewals predictable. Verisign has used the allowed increases, and reports put the wholesale fee at $10.26 now and $10.97 from November 1, 2026. Registrars then add their own margin. For investors with large portfolios, small increases add up. A common mistake is assuming the cap controls the price you pay at the registrar. It only limits the wholesale fee. Registrar prices vary. Always confirm the renewal price at your own registrar.
