Renewal fee

A renewal fee is the yearly cost to keep a domain registered. It is set by the registrar and includes the registry's wholesale fee. It can differ from the first-year price.

Why it matters

Renewal fees look small for .com but vary a lot for other extensions and for registry premium names. Some registrars use a cheap first year and a higher renewal. When you buy a domain, ask for the renewal price. Sellers should include renewal in their carrying cost. A common mistake is paying a low promotional fee and missing the higher rate in later years. Turn on auto-renew to avoid losing a name by accident.
