Registry premium

A registry premium is a domain that the registry operator prices above standard registration fees. The registry sets the higher price, and the registrar passes it on to the buyer.

Why it matters

Many new gTLDs hold back short or common words and sell them at premium prices. The renewal price may also be premium, not just the first-year price. Buyers must check the renewal fee before purchase, since a name that is cheap in year one can be costly in year two. ICANN notes that registrars set their own prices, and renewal costs can differ from the first-year fee. Common mistake: confusing a registry premium with an aftermarket price. The first is set by the registry, and the second by an owner.
