Premium domain

A premium domain is a name offered for sale at a price above the standard registration fee. It is either a name an owner resells on the aftermarket or a name a registry prices as premium.

Why it matters

The two kinds behave differently. An aftermarket premium has a high upfront price, then usually renews at the normal rate. A registry premium may also renew at a high rate every year. That renewal difference changes the true cost of ownership. Always ask a seller or registrar for the renewal price before you pay. A common mistake is paying a large upfront fee on a registry premium and being surprised by next year's bill.
