Aftermarket

The aftermarket is the secondary market for domain names. It covers sales of names that someone already registered, as opposed to buying a new name from a registrar.

Why it matters

Most good names are already taken, so buyers go to the aftermarket. It includes marketplaces, auctions, brokers and direct deals. Prices range from under $100 to millions. Fees, speed and security depend on the venue. Use escrow, and compare listing prices with real comps. A common mistake is thinking an aftermarket price is fixed. Many owners accept lower offers, especially through a broker. Brokers and marketplaces both play a part, and each fits different goals.
