Redemption grace period (RGP)

A short period after a domain expires and its grace days end, when the owner can still restore the name by paying a redemption fee. If it is not restored, the name moves toward deletion.

Why it matters

After a name expires, many gTLD names pass through an auto-renew grace window, then the redemption period of about 30 days, then a short pending-delete stage of about five days. The exact timing and restore fee depend on the registry and registrar. Redemption is usually much more expensive than a normal renewal. For buyers, a name in redemption is not free to grab yet. For sellers, letting a valuable name slip here is costly and risky. A common mistake is assuming an expired name will simply drop on a fixed date. Check the registry's own rules.
