Pending delete

Pending delete is the last status before a domain is purged from the registry. It follows the redemption period and lasts about five days, after which the name becomes available to register again.

Why it matters

ICANN's guide states the domain is held in redemption for 30 days, and then it is purged about five calendar days after that period ends. During pending delete the owner can no longer restore the name. Buyers who want a lapsing domain use a backorder service, since many people compete for the exact drop second. Sellers should not count on a name in this stage. Common mistake: believing a pending delete name can still be bought from its old owner. At this point the owner has lost the right to renew it.
