Backorder

A backorder is a request to catch an expiring domain the moment it becomes available. A service watches the name and tries to register it for you as soon as it drops.

Why it matters

Backorders help buyers who want a name that someone has let lapse. The owner may still renew, so a backorder is no guarantee. If several people backorder the same name, many services run an auction. DropCatch, for example, uses a three-day public auction. Backorders also cost money if you win. A common mistake is thinking you can buy the name early by backordering. The current owner still holds it until the name deletes.
