Why it matters
Each record has a type, a value, and a time to live (TTL). A records point the name to an IP address. MX records route email. TXT records prove ownership or set email security. In a sale, the buyer usually changes records after the domain arrives, to point it at a new site. Sellers should note down their current records before transfer so email does not break. Common mistake: changing the nameservers during a transfer and forgetting that this wipes the old records, which can take a live site or mailbox offline.
