TXT record

A TXT record is a DNS record that stores text. Today it often holds machine-readable data, such as domain ownership proof and email sender rules like SPF.

Why it matters

TXT records matter in two places. First, services such as Google, marketplaces and escrow tools ask you to add a TXT value to prove you control a domain. Second, email authentication uses TXT records. A seller can use a verification TXT record to prove ownership to a buyer without sharing account access. A common mistake is deleting old TXT records during cleanup. That can break email delivery or lock out a verified service.
