Why it matters
DNS is what makes a domain actually work. Your registrar or host stores DNS records that point the name to a website, email service or other tools. For a sale, DNS is part of the handoff. Buyers often ask the seller to keep the site live until the transfer ends, then change the name servers. A common mistake is changing DNS before the sale closes, which can break the seller's own email or give away a negotiating position.
