Registration and DNS

Nameserver

A server that stores a domain's DNS records and answers questions about where the domain's website, email and other services live. A domain lists its nameservers at the registry.

Why it matters

Nameservers decide who controls where a domain points. Change them at your registrar and the website, email and for-sale page all move to a new provider. Sellers often point a domain to a marketplace's nameservers so a for-sale page shows. Buyers should know this setting is separate from ownership. Owning the registration is what counts. A common mistake is thinking a domain is sold because the nameservers moved. Only the registrant and registrar account show who owns it. Also expect a delay after changing nameservers before everyone sees the change.
