Wayback Machine

The Wayback Machine is a free archive of past web pages run by the Internet Archive. It lets you see what a website looked like at earlier dates.

Why it matters

The archive says it holds the history of more than one trillion web pages. Buyers use it to check what a domain was used for before purchase, which can reveal spam, adult, or illegal content. Sellers can use it to show a clean history. A bad past can harm search performance and email delivery. It also helps to spot a trademark link, such as a past brand site. Common mistake: skipping the history check on an expired domain. A name with a spam record may be penalized by search engines.
