Comparable sales (comps)

Comparable sales, or comps, are recorded sales of similar domains. Investors and brokers use them to estimate what a name should fetch, as a real estate agent uses nearby home sales.

Why it matters

Good comps match the extension, length, type of name and sale venue. Databases such as NameBio and the DNJournal sales chart collect public sales. Private sales often go unreported, so comps show only part of the market. A common mistake is using an unlike sale, such as a one-word .com to price a .net with two words. Use several close comps and adjust for the differences. Check the sale date too, because markets change.
