Site migration

A site migration is moving a website to a new domain or structure. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect that sends visitors and search engines from the old address to the new one.

Why it matters

After buying a new domain, a business usually migrates its site. Google recommends server-side permanent redirects, such as 301 or 308. It also suggests keeping the redirects for as long as possible, generally at least one year. Expect some ranking changes during the move. Map each old page to its new match. A common mistake is redirecting everything to the home page, which loses relevance. Keep the old domain registered.
