Generic domain

A generic domain is a name made of a common word or phrase that describes a thing, rather than a brand. Examples are cars.com or shoes.com. It is often called a dictionary or keyword domain.

Why it matters

Generic names can be very valuable because they describe a whole category. One company owning the category name can look like the leader. They also carry legal care. A name made of a common word cannot normally be trademarked on its own, but the owner may still face disputes if a brand uses the same word. Check trademark risk before buying, and expect higher prices for single-word .com names. Price follows demand across the whole category.
