Category-defining domain

A category-defining domain is a name made of the plain term for an industry or product, such as Insurance.com or Hotels.com. Buyers see it as the main address for that whole market.

Why it matters

These names carry the highest prices because one company can claim the category with them. They bring type-in traffic, trust, and a strong search signal. A buyer should check whether the market can pay for it, since the price must fit the company's customer value. Sellers should expect long talks and often a broker. Common mistake: calling any keyword name category-defining. A name qualifies only when it is the most natural word for the whole category, not a niche phrase.
