Buying and selling

Retail sale

A domain sale to an end user, such as a business that will use the name, at a price based on its value to that buyer. It is the opposite of a wholesale sale between investors.

Why it matters

Retail prices are usually much higher than wholesale prices because the buyer will use the name in a business and often can pay more. Retail sales take more work. They need outreach, negotiation, escrow and a longer wait. A seller who prices for retail but sells wholesale loses money. A buyer who expects a wholesale price from a retail seller wastes time. A common mistake is using investor sale prices to price an end-user deal. Match the price to the buyer type, and show how the name will help the buyer's brand.
